It’s so much more fun writing a book with Liz than by myself-and this was the rule: NO “TRACK CHANGES”. One of the ground rules Liz and I set up at the outset might be responsible for some of the magic of our process. And sometimes I write like I talk, and I remember writing “aben,” instead of “amen,” in an email to the two of them about our some-day collaboration.Īnd then we talked about having stuffed up noses and how when you say “Mom” it sounds like Bob and before we’d exhausted the email thread, we were part-way there. I believe that at this very time, I had a terrible cold. And all I could think, right at that instant was, “I want to have a book baby with Liz!” It was all-consuming.Īnd I was like, “Squirrel!” Meaning, “We don’t have to write our novels today?!?!” And Erin wrote that if Liz and I ever had a book baby, it would be something like this particular book. Liz: I was clinging to you like a kitten because I was trying to learn to write my first novel and I’d chosen you (lucky you!) to teach me!Īnd one day out of the blue, we received an email from our mutual agent, Erin Murphy, that included a book review of a forthcoming title with a brief description. Liz and I knew each other but not well at this point, if I remember correctly. Audrey: Like all picture book origin stories, this one starts years ago. Her photographic seriesDomesticity seems to compliment Tully’s concept of the urban animal and how we’re all essentially zookeepers, while at the same time we want to escape our self-created concrete enclosures. An artist who talks more about the figurative, or, as Nieuwoudt puts it, about how “we’re all stuck in one big zoo”, is Germaine de Larch. What I like about this is that everything in this show seems to complicate that boundary.”Īnd certain works in ZOO do just that, they complicate the boundary. I think there are metaphorical layers but I really am afraid of figurative things as I find them reductionist: animals are reduced to metaphors according to human agendas. “Many works are literally ‘animal’ and it has taken on that aspect. “The concept grew rather fast, and we left it up to artists to propose works,” she explains. “I ask Tully why the exhibition features many human-animals, as opposed to more abstract and conceptual pieces. There’s some terrific coverage on it in the Mail & Guardian by Ang Lloyd : NIROXprojects put together a Zoo City-inspired exhibition at Arts on Main in Johannesburg’s Maboneng Precinct with a bunch of amazing artists, curated by Ann Marie-Tully and Neil Nieuwoudt. This is a fun exercise and not without merit, but in the end, such a piecemeal approach is like judging productions of “Hamlet” on their “To Be or Not To Be. The reviewer then lays out the ways that the new translation either falls short or excels, quibbling over word choice and linguistic effects. It is tradition, when reviewing a translation, to set a passage alongside its predecessors in translations by Fagles, Lattimore, Pope, etc. However, every title on this list has the ability to. The poem of Odysseus’s epic journey was composed in about the 8th century B.C., and its tale of a brilliant, exhausted veteran beset by dangers and yearning for home has been collecting admirers ever since. In a secondhand vehicle she christens “Van Halen,” Bruder hits the road to get to know her subjects more intimately. On frequently traveled routes between seasonal jobs, Jessica Bruder meets people from all walks of life: a former professor, a McDonald’s vice president, a minister, a college administrator, and a motorcycle cop, among many others-including her irrepressible protagonist, a onetime cocktail waitress, Home Depot clerk, and general contractor named Linda May. Miss Salome Lunton or Sally Lunton is on the rocks. On the surface, it sounds like a mercenary tale but it is based on a unique social situation, which affected a whole generation of women, maimed by their inability to either earn a living or marry- due to so many men fighting and perishing at the Front, in the Great War of 1914. ‘Sally on the Rocks’ is the story of Miss Sally Lunton’s attempts to secure a husband for herself, to ward off future financial insecurity- in an attempt to prevent herself being flung ‘on the rocks’, as such. I’ve been sent a review copy of the book but all opinions expressed about the book are my own. I’m writing this review of ‘Sally on the Rocks’ as part of the British Library Women Writers Series Blog Tour. Just about anywhere, it seems, except where he actually wants to go.
